This project implemented a Decision Making under Uncertainty framework for UK regulators Ofwat and the Environment Agency (EA) to optimise national water supply and water transfer upgrades from 2020 to 2050.
Nexsys developed a data-management system for the EA, into which all English Water Utility water resource management plans are uploaded. The EA uses this system to perform spreadsheet-style modelling via a custom user interface. We built a National Supply/Demand Pywr model that includes all current, planned, and feasible water transfers across the UK. The data-management system automatically generates the Pywr model whenever new data is uploaded. Nexsys Analytics optimised supply expansion and transfer investments in England using many-objective optimisation with the Pywr model, and developed an online many-objective optimisation interface for EA modellers.
The model and its associated web-based dashboard continue to be used by UK regulators.
