Nexsys Analytics took part in building an economic case for dam safety and modernisation investments in the Amu Darya River basin and provided prioritisation of interventions based on multiple performance metrics.

The economic case considered the severity of the consequences of temporary or permanent dam service disruption to the irrigation and hydropower sectors. The project quantified the multi-sector value of the dams in the Amu Darya in terms of the economic cost of the dams being removed from operation. The project also considered the impacts of new interventions on future value including reducing sedimentation and increasing irrigation conveyance efficiency. We analysed the impacts of the future Rogun dam and how different operating rules can maximise benefits to the different sectors.

The study provides information for decision-making on national and regional dam safety and modernisation investments. We developed new river basin simulation and optimisation tools, enabling decision-makers to improve the planning and operation of the Amu Darya system and considering future changes in water availability and demands as well as limited financial resources.

The study involved building a Pywr water resource system model of the Amu Darya River basin.
