Armenia suffers from considerable water scarcity and water resources are an essential input to economic and social development. Given rises in water demand and likely greater variability of precipitation and stream flows, the Government of Armenia wanted to invest in increased surface water reservoir storage.
In 2023 the per capita storage capacity of Armenia was about 450 m3, which is lower than several neighboring countries. More storage will increase the reliability of water supply and the resilience of economic activities that depend on water for production, including irrigated agriculture, urban water supply and the environment. Some assets should also allow for hydropower production.
Nexsys Analytics built 15 reservoir models of potential reservoirs and assessed their performance in multiple agricultural metrics over 1000s stochastic hydrological scenarios. Reservoirs were ranked in order of performance for decision makers.
