We developed a national adaptive resilient water resource system strategy for Botswana. The strategy takes into account climatic effects on hydrology and non-climatic uncertainties related to population and economic growth of water resources management.
We conducted a vulnerability assessment of the current system and prioritised water resource system investments including three transboundary options including the Chobe-Zambezi transfer, Lesotho-Botswana transfer, and desalination from Namibia and created an adaptive roadmap of option implementation based on climate change impact and population/demand growth triggers.
The study evaluated trade-offs between different sectoral water resource system performance metrics of different portfolios of future water resource system interventions.
Our study identified a potential new intervention not yet considered by the government which could unlock stranded storage in the north of the country by expanding the current North South Carrier, which brings water from the north to the south. Three in-person workshops including model training were held.
